Myself and Darren Johnson flew from Stanstead to Munich and drove to Satzburg. The car sat nav was a nightmare so I had to call home and get Lisa to find the directions on the internet and text them through to us. This was spot on and we arrived at the hotel/venue at around midnight.
Saturday 4th September – Austria Players Championship.
I lost in the first round to Dyson Parody of Gibraltar. I took the first leg in 13 darts and watched Dyson get into gear and throw superbly for the next 6 legs (4 of them sitting on doubles after 12 darts).
I did not necessarily do anything wrong so I had no reason to be down-beat about my performance.
Darren lost to Roland Scholton in the first round 6-4 and the best performer for our bunch was Chris Thompson who lost in the last 16 after beating Robert Thornton and Jelle Klassen.
On the evening we went for a meal in a restaurant across the road from the venue. 5 meals ordered, nobody ate what they ordered because of language mix-ups.
We then had some light refreshments at the sports bar and went back to our hotel.
Sunday 5th September – Austria Players Championship.
I had drawn Erwin Remkena in the first round and knew little of him. I raced into a 5-0 lead finishing every leg under 17 darts. Erwin then won 2 legs and I wrapped the game up in 16 darts for a 6-2 win.
I was pleased with this win and it set me up for a match with Andy Hamilton.
Myself and Andy managed to miss the first 5 darts each at the 25/bull segments and we could not believe it. On the 6th attempt Andy hit the bull and won the off. He set off with 180,180 and I set off 180,140 so despite not being able to hit the 25 we hit 11 consecutive darts in the treble 20 – strange game.
Andy missed the 9 dart leg and I won it in 12 darts. Andy then through some good darts for the next 4 legs and went 4-1 up. Each leg I was left on scores between 40 – 64 so I was not a million miles away. I took the 6th leg in 14 darts and left 40 in the last leg before Andy hit double 10 for the match.
None of the Yorkshire boys did any good on Sunday Darren and I had a steady drive back to Munich.
