Coventry Players Championships – Ricoh Arena

In the first round I had drawn Alan Tabern (right). Alan is rank number 12 in the world and you don’t get to that position without thoroughly deserving it. He is a top class player and although there could have been harder draws out there I do not think there would be many.

The first 2 legs went against the darts with me taking the first leg and Alan too the second. Each leg then went with the throw until the match stood at 3-3. I then broke Alans throw and went 4-3 up but he responded with a 12 darter ending on a 143 finish to level the match at 4-4. Another good leg followed and he was 5-4 up. I put a good leg of darts together and hit double 5 in 16 darts to bring the match to 5-5. In the 11th leg Alan hit 140,140,100 and set up double 16 for the match, however I was not lying down and after Alan missed double 16 I narrowly missed the bullseye for a 122 checkout which would have sealed the match. Alan made no mistake this time and checked out to win the match 6-5.

Overall I was happy with my performance and my finishing under pressure was very good. After my analysis with my son Daniel he explained that there had only been one leg which I should have won but due to 2 darts missed I actually lost the leg (this was the 2nd leg) and could have put me 2-0 up but there were 2 occasions where I won legs where Alan had the first shot.

Mark Walsh - Sky Poker World Grand Prix (Lawrence Lustig/PDC)Looking at improving from this I need to win the off by winning the nearest Bull at the start of the match which would mean that I would have the advantage of throwing first if the match comes to 5-5. I am becoming the 6-5 specialist!

Mark Walsh(right) won the event beating Phil Taylor in the final 6-4. Well done Mark!

Report and Results

PDC UK Open West Midlands Regional Final – Ricoh Arena, Coventry

I almost knew I would be in a preliminary game today and low and behold – I was. This time I was due to play Steve Musson. I don’t know much about Steve but I know he ran my friend Martyn Turner very close on the Saturday so this meant he had to be of a high standard.

I won the Bull off!!!!!! Then went 1-0 down when Steve took out 94 in 2 darts, he then took the 2nd leg and I was well and truly in a battle. Steve went into a 5-2 lead and had darts to wrap the game up 6-2 but missed and I battled away to get into the game with close advice and coaching from my son Daniel and levelled the match at 5-5 but this time it was me to throw first and I made no mistake and won the match 6-5. Positives from this match are that I won a game which I really should have lost and I have often been on the opposite end of that equation and it is nice to get ‘one back’. I also finished very well and never missed a dart at a double when I went 2-5 down…

Denis Ovens next and I really need to beat him for £200 on the UK Open Order of Merit. Denis is one of the best floor players in the world and currently ranked 20 in the world.

I lost the bull on this occasion and Denis went 1-0 up, I was determined to get into this match early and hit a 180 and 52 checkout for 17 darts to level the match up. Denis then went 2-1 up and I put 3 excellent legs together including a 14 and a 15 darter to go 4-2 up. I then had a shot at a 60 checkout to go 5-2 up but missed 2 darts at double 20 and Denis reduced the deficit to 4-3. The 8th leg was a nervy leg and I ended up hitting double 2 with my last dart to go 5-3 up and came out of the blocks well in the 9th leg hitting 122,137,140 and wrapped the match up 6-3 hitting double top with my first dart.

Next round it was Robert Thornton who is one of the form players in the PDC at the minute and is currently ranked number 18 in the world.

I lost the bull in this match and it was a strange game to say the least. Robert seemed worse for wear drink wise and I got caught out listening and not concentrating to 100% and fair play to Robert he took chances that I missed and won the match 6-1.Phil Taylor - 2008 Blue Square UK Open (Lawrence Lustig/PDC)

Phil Taylor won the event beating Wayne Jones in the final 6-5   click photo (right) for Report and full results.

Positives from the weekend

1.       Definite improvement on doubles under pressure.

2.    Daniel is quickly becoming my coach – proud of this lad with old head on young shoulders. Without his support and advice at times this weekend I could have had bad results – thanks son.

3.    Won a 6-5 match by making sure I won the off by winning the nearest Bull.

4.    Confidence improving all the time and beating Denis backs up the fact I have been playing well but have been unlucky.

5.    Won £200 for UK Open Order of Merit and am now on £400 so this could be enough to get me to the finals at Bolton – one more £200 and that will guarantee it.

6.   I am continuously changing things (slightly) and am getting better results – Always remember – Do what you have always done and get what you have always got!

Happy darting,    Dave Ladley

Brentwood Players Championships – March 21st

I picked Dan (my son) up and travelled to Mexborough early on Saturday morning to meet up with Darren Johnson, Mark Lawrence and Dennis Priestley for our trip to Brentwood. We arrived at 9am and did not want to break our usual tradition by been the last people in the venue to register so we nipped off to Sainsburys for some breakfast. We got in and registered at 10:45.

When the draw came out Dan came and told me I had drawn Par Rihonen who I do not know that much about but I know he has had some good results and I do remember playing him in the Catalunya Open Pairs final a few years ago (may not be the same guy though).

It was quite a strong game but we both missed opportunities and Par ran out a 6-3 winner. There were some great points about the match and some bad points. The winner played Steve Beaton and I really did fancy playing Steve but unfortunately that was not going to happen.

Par lost 6-3 to Steve Beaton in the next round. Phil Taylor won the event overall.

UK Open South East, Brentwood – March 22nd

Sainsburys for breakfast again on Sunday then went to register at the Brentwood Centre.

Dan went to find out the draw and came back telling me I had drawn James Barton in the preliminary round. James had some good results on the Saturday including a 6-4 win over Kevin McDine so I knew I had a sizable task on my hands.

The first 7 legs were of a high standard and the score was 4-3 to James and I had hit 6 x 180’s plus had been on 11 dart legs twice. I won the 8th leg and broke the throw to win the 9th leg so I was now 5-4 in front and looking at 75 for the match. I hit T17 and missed 2 darts at double 12 for the match and watched James level up at 5-5. The last leg was against the darts and I got a shot at 69 to wrap the match up – T7, 8 and missed one dart at double top. James made no mistake and hit double 10 for the match 6-5. I felt gutted but was happy with my overall performance.

Positives

  1. Good performances both days that I can and will improve on.
  2. Played better Sunday by preparing differently.

 Other News

I have today signed a new sponsorship deal which will allow me to carry on this season in the PDC with less finance worries. This is all ‘hush hush’ at the minute – all will be revealed shortly! I am a very happy man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PDC North West Players Championships – Wigan

I was unfortunate enough to be drawn out in a preliminary game and was also unfortunate to be drawn against Joe Palfreyman who I have known for years and respect him highly as a dart player.

This was a difficult game to say the least and the game swayed from one side to the other firstly by Joe taking a 2-0 lead then me pulling back to 2-2 and moving 3-2 ahead only to see Joe pull it back to 3-3. With the game going to 4-4 I found enough in me to pull ahead and win the match 6-4 and play against John Quantock of York.

John Quantock is a good solid player and is one of a bunch of us who travel together. Some of Johns wins have been impressive and have included 2 wins over Robert Thornton! I played John in Gibraltar last year and failed to win a leg so I knew I HAD to improve on this. And improve I did – I took a 5-1 lead including some great finishing and an 11 dart leg. The 7th leg I missed double top for a 13 darter only to see John take the leg and follow up by taking leg 8. With the match resting at 5-3 to me I found another great leg and finished the match with a 142 checkout (T17,T17,D20) to win the match 6-3.

Round 2 was against Tony Eccles. I have played Tony numerous times in previous years but always in the BDO and never in PDC and I knew that Tonys strengths were his finishing and taking chances if they were given to him.

The match started quite different with Tony letting me in to take my own chances and I went into a 2-0 lead and could have been 2-0 down! Alas the game swung the other way and Tony took 3 legs that were mine to lose. I missed a chance in leg 9 and Tony won 6-3. Overall very happy with my game for the day though!!

Tony lost to Mark Walsh in the next round and Dennis Priestley won the event.

PDC North West UK Open Regional Final – Wigan

I was hoping to miss the preliminary round today but was again drawn out in the preliminary this time was against Geoff Whitworth. I was confident going into this game but things were just not going for me. Each leg went with the darts and the match was sitting at 4-4 with Geoff to throw. I hit a 14 dart leg which I was hoping to follow up with in the 10th leg but back came Geoff with a 13 dart leg to level the game at 5-5. The 11th leg was tight and Geoff missed double top to take the match 6-5 and knowing I only had this chance I took it with open arms – 120 finish (T20,S20,D20) under BIG pressure.

The next round was against Peter Manley and he gave me a reminder of why he is nicknamed ‘One Dart’ by taking some great chances and finishing very well. With the match standing at 5-2 in Peters favour I missed a 136 checkout on double 8 and watched Peter wrap the match up 6-2.

Peter carried on playing well and eventually lost out in the Semi Final with James Wade winning the event.

Positives from the weekend

1.      Finishing has improved.

2.      Won a 6-5 match instead of losing a decider which I have been doing.

3.      Confidence improving all the time.

4.      I changed some things and got better results – Always remember – Do what you have always done and get what you have always got!

Happy darting,

Saturday 28th February – Scottish Players Championship – Magnum Centre, Irvine

On Saturday I had drawn Arron Monk from Hampshire. I knew I had a tough game because recently he has been playing some great darts and has gained some good scalps along the way.

I took the first leg and missed a 48 finish in the 2nd leg to go 2-0 up. Arron then had the momentum and started edging into the lead. He went 5-2 up and had a shot to win 6-2 but I finished 113 to pull back to 5-3 and hit back to back 15 darters to square the match up at 5-5. In the 11th leg we were both on 101 after 12 darts and Arron missed the finish leaving 56. I then missed the finish leaving 60 but Aaron made no mistakes and ended the game in 2 darts for a 6-5 victory.

I was mad that I did not take my early opportunity and the fact that when I went 5-2 down I began to play good darts.

Arron went on to beat Colin Osborne and John Part in the next 2 games so this made me feel quite a lot better. Well done mate you played some excellent darts – definitely one to watch for the future or even NEAR future!   PDC REPORT HERE

Sunday 1st March – Scottish Regional UK Open Qualifier – Magnum Centre, Irvine.

On Sunday I had drawn my good friend and travelling buddy – Mark Lawrence. Both myself and Mark were not looking forward to this game but we had said that at least one of us would be going through to the next round.

The first leg was 14 darts to me and I was playing well. Unfortunately we both lowered our standards somewhat and the game became quite scrappy. Mark went 5-1 up and guess what – Dave starts to play proper darts!!!!!!!! God this is maddening. I came back into the match and took the next 3 legs to get the game back to 5-4 in Marks favour.

Alas this was it for me as I missed a dart at double top for level terms Mark stepped up to take the match! To be fair we both hated playing this match but me more-so because I lost it!!!      Robert Thornton makes it a double

Positives from the weekend

1.      Played a good game on Saturday and finished well when I really needed it.

2.      Some of my scoring was good on both days

Things to improve and work on

1.      Finishing

2.      Consistency

3.       Positive attitude

Next up for me

5 x 12 hour day shifts then a train journey to Wigan for the Players Championships and UK Open Qualifier!!!!!!!

Thought for the week leading up to playing in Wigan and other events

“If you do what you have always done then you will get what you always got!”

  1. now moved up to rank 108 from 115 from the start of the season and am not far off moving back into the top 100!
  2. All of the changes I made worked excellently on Sunday and now I need to concentrate on strengthening my positive points going forward.

 Next up for me

I have joined the British Super League Champions ‘Lord Conyers’ of Conisborough and play my first match for them on Sunday V’s Cleckheaton. I am hoping that this will improve my overall game going forward.

 Things to work on

 1.       Practice finishing and consistency. I plan to practice more than ever before in order to improve more and more before travelling to Germany.
