The Academy endured a 16 hour, 380 mile
round trip and some tough opposition to again come away
laden with trophies.
The excellently organised Essex Youth
Open always attracts players of great potential and this
year was no different so with several previous winners
missing the Academy were looking to some new faces
coming through the ranks.
The Academy suffered early setbacks
with the young ladies either eliminating each other or
rueing missed doubles and Andover favourites Sean White
and Arron Monk drawing each other in the first round
with the latter prevailing on this occasion.
White, however was to show real character
to go on and win the plate without dropping another leg
all day. Karl Brooks lost to the eventual runner up.
Andover’s strength in depth lies in the seemingly
endless talent and determination from the junior ranks
and continuing on from last year’s domination produced
12 of the last 16 and 3 of the last 4 in the under 14’s
event. Liam Deavall was to lose a tight semi to Ray
Lockington who in turn lost a good final to the
excellent Dan Read.
The senior boy’s event was also dominated
by the black and whites again providing three of the
last four. The first semi saw Gary Thorne unable to
recapture his earlier excellent form and lost out to the
consistent Conner Bevis. Arron Monk proved
too strong for Ipswich’s Steve Turner in the second to
set up another all Andover final. Bevis has been in fine
form of late and stuck manfully to the task but had to
cede to the talented Monk 3-1.
The presentations were concluded by MC
Barry Gilbey and England International Viv Dundon but
not before another two awards went Andover’s way; Monk
collected the most maximums award and Dan Read
celebrated the day’s highest checkout an admirable 141.
The entire squad were again a credit to the Academy and
their sponsors bringing a stream of compliments of their
talent sportsmanship and professional attitude.
