Moses Wheeler Darts-Athlon:
Entries are still being taken for the 4th
Moses Wheeler Darts-Athlon to be held at the Entertainer
on Saturday 29th August. The event is in
honour of one of Andover’s darting legends and although
much mystery surrounds the gentleman darter from New
Street, he is widely acknowledged as the best player of
his time in an era when darts was massive in the town.
As former News of the World Champion in
the days when the Ally-Pally was the Wembley of darts,
Moses won just about everything there was to win in the
region. Although small in stature he stood head and
shoulders above his opponents at the oche and was the
jewel in the crown of the outstanding George Hotel team
of the fifties and sixties. During the 70’s and 80’s it
was not unusual to hear his peers talking of his
prowess, fabled stories of nominated doubles being hit
on boards covered by a newspaper and of darts being
expertly thrown into the gaps of an out-stretched hand
to name but two.
Moses died in 1975 at the premature age
of 63, so it would be interesting to hear his views on
his game that has become a multi-million pound industry.
The format includes rounds of traditional
pub games such as shanghai, halve-it, bullseyes and
round the board on doubles as well as 501 singles. With
over £400 in prize money to be won the first 40 entrants
only will be accepted for this event at a cost of £10
per player.
