Arron Monk claimed his second Classic ranking title of the year when defeating his Hampshire county captain Kevin Ede 5-3 in the final of the Keith Goacher Singles at the Entertainer last Saturday.

It was a good day for Andover and Hampshire in taking 6 of the final 8 places; Southampton’s Lee Ward reached the semi final and Craig Binge made a second successive last eight appearance. Surrey’s Aaron Turner reached the last 4 before succumbing to master Monk and another youngster John Mulley of Berkshire made the board finals. Andover’s Mark Thorne and Glen Dawkins bowed out at the quarter final stages but there was plenty to cheer about from an Academy perspective. Conner Bevis and Gary Thorne made the last 16 with the former hitting 6x180’s along the way, 14 year old Jamie Tarrant enjoyed a 116 checkout and Craig Pike hit his first classic ranking maximum. Mark Thorne lost a last leg decider despite hitting 5x180’s and Darren Alderman had the day’s highest finish in a 160 against PDC star Andy Jenkins.

However, it was to be Arron’s day again who always seemed to have something in hand over his opponents borne out by 94 and 95 dart averages in the semi and final respectively.

The day’s events were brought to a conclusion by the presentations and guest of honour Keith Goacher who having presided over Colin Monk’s rise to fame was on hand to lead the plaudits to Arron who has every chance of emulating his father’s success.

Academy News

Week 10 at the Academy was the singles session and on board 4 it was the girls who dominated. Ladies captain Christine Pike was in good form joint top with Ellie May and Dominic Baker. Amanda Paine although unlucky on her doubles recorded most tons. Board 3 was again tied with the improving Jack Morris and Craig Pike both 3 from 4, Dean Evans top scored with an excellent 144 set up and top finish of 66. Sam Ellis is showing great potential and attitude which is reflecting in his achievements. Sam was 5 from 5 on board 3 ahead of another two excellent prospects Luke Goddard; 4 from 5 and Jamie Tarrant 3. Goddard hit a superb 138 closure and Hatty Raynsford had an excellent 82.

Conner Bevis is beginning to show high levels of consistency and in heading board 1 registered 12 tons in his 4 wins. Dan Read and Gary Thorne both won three with the latter notching a maximum. Gavin Howard had the best finish with 102 and recorded the best overall average with 22.35.

The junior section is a pleasure to behold with their attitude and enthusiasm and it is exciting to think what levels they can reach in the not too distant future. All 25 are ahead of the planned schedule and their accuracy around the double wires most impressive.

On this occasion, Ryan Morgans, Ryan Rowe, Michael McDonnell, Kyla Tobin and Amy Thorne deserve a special mention.
